About the Studio and Its Band…

At the end of the jazz era, there was a large workforce of professional musicians in America that needed to find a new way of life. It was no longer possible to make a living from playing supper clubs, jazz clubs, and dance halls. The kids wanted rock, and with LP’s and radio becoming the way of music consumption, the live musician seemed to have become a dinosaur.

Thankfully, for a fortunate few there was a place where great musicians could still find regular work; the recording studio.

At the dawn of rock and roll, what sold was a lead singer with an image and a few songs catchy enough to sell singles. But when these musicians came to the studio to make recordings, it was rare that they came with an established backing band. This created the need to have a reputable stable of players on call for recording sessions. Organically, many of these studios, using the same musicians for multiple sessions developed a unique feel and groove to every song recorded there. And this led to singer-songwriters shopping different studios to record their singles and albums, and what they were really buying was the backing band’s unique vibe.

These became the legendary dedicated studio bands, most of whom never toured or received album credits, preferring the stable paycheck and lifestyle off the road. And the sound of the 50’s and 60’s was born.  Greats like the house band of Muscle Shoals studios, “The Funk Brothers,” of Motown Records, the Wrecking Crew in Los Angeles, Booker T. and the M.G.’s of Stax Records, and the list goes on.

The DCT hopes to revive that movement, on a grass roots level.  We love to play and record our own music, and we love studio work. And for every touring band, there are a hundred talented songwriters out there waiting for the right foundation for their vision. If the chemistry and vibe are right, we can work with you to bring your music to the next level. Whether you need us just to have a place to record, or to help develop your songs with a backing band in ours or another studio, we will work with you to find the sweet spot.

We are a new studio, with a whole new (old) approach to the studio session.  Contact us to arrange for a free review of your demos. Our passion for making music with others is just as important as the business. If the musician and the studio are a fit, we will negotiate rates by the day, or by the hour.
