“Folk music is country, just without the twang.”
Dan started music young, with five years of piano, as well as low brass. When the inspiration to write songs came into the picture, the need for far cooler instruments became obvious. He then studied folk guitar, as well as classical and jazz technique on upright bass. The influences have been broad: From a stint of Lilith Fair and pachouli-infused self-deprecating folk music, to late ’90s trip hop and ambient, to classic rock psychedelia with interminable guitar solos. He has recorded ten albums of original music, and the evolution continues.
“Every song needs a middle eight.”
Al is all about the hook. He has influences that delve into popular music that spans the last five decades, and has studied it like a holy text. You might hear him channeling Brian Wilson in a bridge, just to finish on a something that echoes of syncopated Miles Davis, Bitches’ Brew era. Although bass is his ancestral home, he often visits drums and keyboards to find what his mind’s ear is hearing.
